22/33 - LGSA - PhD candidates - Winek (m/f/d)
Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI), Jena
The Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) is a joint program of the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute (FLI) and the Friedrich Schiller University (FSU) in Jena. The School calls for applications for a
PhD position (m/f/d)
in the new research group “Microbiome in stroke and aging” led by Dr. Katarzyna Winek. The position will be available from January 2023.
The Leibniz Graduate School on Aging and Age-Related Diseases (LGSA) belongs to the Leibniz Association - a non-university research organization equivalent to the Max Planck Society and the Helmholtz Association.
The Winek group at the Leibniz Institute on Aging – Fritz Lipmann Institute studies pathophysiological processes in ischemic stroke, one of the leading causes of death and disability. Specifically, we focus on brain-body communication and the impact of the immune system on the outcome after stroke, investigating immune regulators such as non-coding RNAs and the microbiome. In our research, we work with in-vivo and cell culture models, RNA sequencing, FACS, standard molecular biology techniques and bioinformatic approaches with the ultimate goal of identifying new therapeutic targets.
We are looking for highly motivated PhD candidates interested in clinical neuroscience, the brain-gut axis, immunology and the microbiome to pursue an interdisciplinary and translational PhD project in the newly established lab. We offer a highly cooperative environment, support of core facilities and possibilities of international collaborations.
Eligible are students that have obtained, or that will obtain within half a year, an academic degree comparable to the master degree or diploma in in biology or related fields with excellent marks.
Further requirements are:
- Experience in in-vivo studies is a plus
- Genuine interest in conducting a highly interdisciplinary research project
- Training and interest in immunology/microbiology/molecular biology/neuroscience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
