At the Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB), one position is available in the MetaCom Metabolomics Unit for
Chemical-Technical Assistant or Chemical Laboratory Technician or Biological-Technical Assistant or Biological Laboratory Technician (m/f/d)
(Full or part-time (min. 75%), initially limited to two years, Starting January 2027)
Research topic:
You will support the MetaCom – Center for Plant Metabolomics and Computational Biochemistry, established in 2023. Our team focuses on the analysis of small molecules (metabolites) from plants using chromatography and mass spectrometry, and on under-standing their roles in plant physiological processes.
The smooth execution of these complex technologies requires a well-organized laboratory environment and dedicated, careful team members.
Your tasks:
- Processing of sample materials and preparation for analytical analyses (e.g., extractions and derivatizations)
- Performance of standard and quality control measurements, primarily using GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry)
- Basic maintenance and servicing of GC-MS systems
- Support in data analysis and interpretation
- Preparation of experimental documentation and quality assurance records
- Conducting plant physiological experiments and harvesting plant samples for analysis
- Performing molecular biology techniques, including RNA extraction, PCR, and Western blotting
- Training and supervision of students and trainees
Your profile:
- Completed training as CTA, PTA, BTA, or MTA, or a Bachelor’s/Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biology, Biochemistry
- Solid experience in chemical-analytical laboratory work
- Preferably, practical experience with chromatography and mass spectrometry (preferable GCMS)
- Hands-on experience in preparing biological (preferably plant) samples
- Careful, reliable, and independent working style
- Interest and motivation to operate complex analytical instruments
- Language skills: German or English at C1 level
- Willingness to work in an international team

Who we are:
The Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) is a non-university research institution of the Leibniz Association on the Weinberg Campus of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. As a foundation under public law, the IPB is under direct supervision of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The IPB is an internationally recognized research institution and consists of four scientific Departments and additional independent research groups (approx. 200 employees, including around 40 doctoral students). Research at the IPB aims to understand the (bio)chemical basis of plant resilience and performance in challenging environments related to climate change. The IPB offers excellent research facilities and state-of-the-art infrastructure to study the chemical diversity, biochemical interactions and biological functions of small natural product molecules in and from plants and fungi (https://www.ipb-halle.de/en/).
