The National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) is an outstanding infrastructure initiative for the scientific communities in Germany with the aim to harness the great potential of research data as a valuable resource for science and research. The following positions will be placed within this network.

The Technische Informationsbibliothek (TIB) – Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology – Program Area C, Research and Development, is looking to employ two

Data Scientists/Knowledge Graph Engineers (m/f/d)

to work in Data Science & Digital Libraries Research Group (Prof. Dr. Sören Auer) at the earliest possible opportunity.

For one position, the regular weekly working time is 39.8 hours (full-time). For the second position, the regular weekly working time is 29.85 hours (part-time, 75 %).

Both positions are initially limited to three years with envisioned extension in the context of NFDI. The full-time position is only suitable for part-time work to a limited extent. The remuneration of both positions is based on pay scale group 13 TV-L.

Your challenge

The National Research Data Infrastructure for Engineering (NFDI4Ing) consortium brings together all engineering research communities and promotes the management of their research data. Behind NFDI4Ing are eight university and three non-university research institutions, including the TIB - Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology. In cooperation with the Forschungszentrum Jülich, the TIB is leading a research initiative to develop a semantic framework for the machine-processable representation and reproduction of scientific concepts in the field of extensive and heterogeneous data requirements.

Your tasks will focus on

  • Formalize methodological knowledge to semantically rich and machine-interpretable concepts
  • Embed the methodological concepts into a knowledge graph structure and ensure their findability and accessibility by deploying a concept exploration framework
  • Design and development of a web frontend for the selection of software components and data sets to scientific workflows
  • Support the automated application of methodological knowledge by providing web services compiling necessary software and data components

Your qualities

Your competence area should be squarely rooted in Data Science and software engineering or related fields. You should be able to think creatively, grasp new knowledge quickly, be able to design and develop innovative software systems and be interested in mastering complex challenges.

  • Successfully completed university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in a relevant field of study such as Computer Science, Information Science, Mathematics or comparable
  • Excellent proficiency in Semantic Web Technologies, Ontology development and Data Management
  • Excellent knowledge of one or more modern programming languages (especially Java, Python and JavaScript/Web technologies) as well as proven experience in software development and modern methods of software development (especially Git, Scrum, DevOps, CI)


  • Familiarity with Natural Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Data Analytics or Digital Libraries
  • Knowledge of Research Data Management Tools and Services
