The following position at the Deutsches Bergbau-Museum Bochum, Leibniz Research Museum for Geo-resources of the DMT-Gesellschaft für Lehre und Bildung (DMT-LB), is to be filled as soon as possible.

Deputy Head of Section/Advanced Researcher (Senior Scientist) in Archaeometallurgy (m/f/i) (Full-time position)

Your area of responsibility

Duties in function of a deputy head of the research section is the contribution to administrative tasks, representing the group’s interests within the DBM, substantial team-building function, and maintaining the microscopy lab and the specialized rock, ore mineral, thin section, ceramic and metallurgical collections of the Archaeometallurgy section used for teaching purposes. Professional language is German and English. For administrative tasks, the candidate needs to be willing to achieve conversational and teaching level in German desired within the first two years of employment.

Scientific expectation will urgently include skills in field and laboratory: Recording and data collection in the field, application of geological and mining maps, knowledge in sampling of artefacts and rock specimens, preparation of both such as production of thin section and polished blocks, laboratory skills, optical mineral microscopy, geochemical and petrological analysis methods (as SEM, XRD, XRF, EPMA, ICP-MS, and isotope methods with focus on the application to metal objects), metallurgical processes in theory and practice, handling of databases and writing of reports, publications and grant proposals. Own research projects are required to fit into the Archaeometallurgy section’s research program.

The successful candidate will also be part of the teaching team of the research department serving the archaeometry curricula of the Institute of Archaeological Sciences at Ruhr-University Bochum. It is thus required to already have teaching experience in the field of archaeometry/archaeometallurgy. The candidate needs to be prepared to start with teaching four 4 SWS archaeometry/archaeometallurgy on bachelor and master level right away. Experience in field exercises and microscopy teaching is highly desired.

Your profile

The successful candidate will have a PhD in geosciences/materials science for at least six years. (S)he will be an expert in archaeometry/archaeometallurgy with longer-term experience. He/she should be a passionate scientist and an excellent team-worker and able to successfully communicate on scientific, administrative and teaching level.

An advanced geoscientist or material scientist is sought with strong background in mineralogy and/or ore geology or metallurgy. The candidate further needs to be proven in Archaeometallurgy through his/her PhD and/or further successful projects. Expected is broad knowledge of archaeometallurgical methods. Extended record of respective publications in peer-reviewed journals is required.

Remuneration is based on the house rate of DMT-LB.
