The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz (Germany) and the Faculty of History and CulturalStudies of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) are jointly inviting applications for the position of

Director (m/f/d) of the Department of Abendländische Religionsgeschichte (History of Religions)

combined with a

University Professorship in Early Modern/Modern/Contemporary History with a Focus on European Religious History (W 3 LBesG)

The position is to be filled by April 1, 2022.

IEG is a non-profit institution devoted to academic research. It is an independent research institute and a member of the Leibniz Association. Its purpose is to conduct academic research on European history. The Institute fulfils this purpose through individual and joint research efforts of its staff, through the award of research scholarships and fellowships for international academics, and through the collaboration with other institutions in Germany and abroad. As a member institute of the Leibniz Association IEG is jointly funded by the German federal and state governments.

As a member of the executive board and in cooperation with the director of the department of Universalgeschichte (universal history), the future holder of the position is jointly responsible for the Institute‘s current operations. The executive board oversees the development of IEG’s research profile, the budget, the development and organisation of interdisciplinary research projects with national and international partners, and the collaboration with other institutions of the Leibniz Association.

The teaching load at Johannes Gutenberg University amounts to two weekly hours per semester.

Prerequisites include a dissertation with a historical focus, familiarity with the discipline of history, and additional excellent academic achievements. The position requires relevant international and innovative research achievements in the field of European religious history and/or church history. Other requirements are a special interest in the development of digital historical research, leadership skills, experience in academic teaching and in the field of knowledge transfer, willingness to be involved in the relevant bodies of the Leibniz Association, a wide international network, and experience in acquiring and managing major research projects.

Applicants must meet the general requirements according to public services law and the relevant higher education state laws (§ 49 Hochschulgesetz Rheinland-Pfalz). The position is filled on the basis of a joint appointment procedure by JGU and IEG. The future holder of the position will be appointed to JGU as a university professor and then be granted leave of absence in order to be employed at IEG.
