Marine Morphogens

starting as soon as possible.

Research Areas: Marine Microbiology, Biochemistry, Analytical Chemistry

This project is part of the recently awarded ERC Starting Grant “MORPHEUS” to Dr. Christine Beemelmanns, which interlinks chemistry and microbiology to understand the chemical signals that influence and dictate eukaryotic development in the marine environment.

The field of work might include:

  • Comparative metabolomics of bacterial morphogens, and if appropriate HPLC-based purification of metabolites
  • Comparative genomic analysis of morphogenic bacteria
  • Marine bioassays for structure-activity studies
  • Biochemical characterization of enzymes (in collaboration within the group, physiological studies, metabolomics and proteomics experiments, as well as structural studies will be performed)

Main requirements:

  • Degree and excellent experience in microbiology, biochemistry, microbial physiology, metabolic engineering or related disciplines. Candidates about to obtain their degree are welcomed to apply.
  • Advanced experience in metabolic engineering especially of bacteria
  • Experience in microbial (co-)cultivations
  • The candidate should be willing and able to work in an international, interdisciplinary research team
  • Ability for team-oriented as well as creative and independent work
  • Very good communication skills in English

Preferred Skills:

  • Advanced knowledge in performing omics investigations (comparative genomics) including bioinformatics data analysis
  • Very good knowledge in analytical methods (HPLC, LC-MS etc)
  • Strong knowledge in microscopy is highly advantageous

We offer: The successful candidate will be hosted in the independent Junior Research Group “Chemical Biology of Microbe-Host Interactions” headed by Dr. Christine Beemelmanns. The group conducts innovative cutting-edge research by combining state-of-the-art natural product chemistry with ecological important research questions. The Leibniz-HKI is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups. The PhD candidate will participate in the structured program of the International Leibniz Research School and become an associated member of the Jena School of Microbial Communication.
