Doctoral Researchers/Postdoctoral Researchers (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), Leipzig

The Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO) conducts comparative research into the history and culture of the region between the Baltic Sea, the Black Sea and the Adriatic from late antiquity to the present day. The GWZO, which has been based in the centre of Leipzig since 2010, employs around 90 staff from Germany and abroad. Starting this year, in 2025, it will also have an office in the centre of Prague.

For the new Prague-based »Knowledge and Participation« department (headed by Dr. Michal Frankl), we are looking to recruit, as of 1 September 2025, a total of four researchers:

  • two doctoral researchers (m/f/d): reference number: 25_01_A4

These two positions are initially for a fixed term of three years. The institute’s personnel development plan allocates four years for internally financed doctoral positions. The fourth year is budgeted and will be granted, provided that previously defined milestones have been met.

  • two postdoctoral researchers (m/f/d): reference number: 25_02_A4

These two positions are initially for a fixed term of four years. Subject to a positive evaluation and if budgetary conditions permit, they can be made permanent.

The place of work is Prague. However, postholders will be expected to travel to Leipzig to participate in major Institute events. Employment is governed by Czech labour law and remunerated in accordance with local salary scales.

The department »Knowledge and Participation« examines the multifaceted and sometimes tense relationship between academic and non-academic knowledge. The focus is on participation in knowledge production and science in Central and Eastern Europe, both in the present and in the past – an area and field of activity that has gained prominence in recent years as citizen science.

The department’s research is divided into two main thematic strands: »Marginalised Knowledge« and »Digital Participation«. On the one hand, the department’s work focuses on actors from marginalised groups historically and today. Among other things, it asks how knowledge »on the margins« is articulated, heard, stored or interpreted. Drawing on approaches from postcolonial studies, the department’s projects aim to critically reflect on hierarchies and exclusions present in archives created and organised by the state. Additionally, a crucial focus is on the impact of new digital tools on the production of scientific knowledge. The starting point here is how digital technologies, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are transforming the way knowledge is created and disseminated.

Future postholders’ research should fit within this scope. Possible projects include explorations of marginalised knowledge and the effects of different forms of participation and crowdsourcing. We particularly welcome projects that deal with migrant, dissident, feminist or queer archives; collaborative platforms such as Wikipedia; or digital memory projects in Central and Eastern Europe. We are also interested in research on the effects of AI on minor languages and in non-academic, participatory contexts and projects with their own citizen science component.
