Doctorate Student (m/f/d)

Research Center Borstel - Leibniz Lung Center (FZB), Borstel

We are announcing a position as

Doctorate Student (m/f/d)

in the Research group Cellular Microbiology.

Topic: Host-microbiota coadaptation in respiratory infection

The Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center (RCB) is an internationally renowned research institute with 550 employees, financed by the Federal Government and the State of Schleswig-Holstein. Our central task is research and patient care in the field of respiratory diseases. We operate both basic research infrastructures and a medical clinic. Our goal is to improve existing methods for the detection, prevention and treatment of lung diseases and to develop new, innovative therapeutic approaches.

Within the framework of the Leibniz Science Campus Evolutionary Medicine of the Lung (EvoLung), the RCB is looking for a highly motivated doctorate candidate. EvoLung is a consortium of the University of Kiel, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Plön, and the Research Center Borstel. EvoLung integrates evolutionary theory into lung research to achieve a better understanding of chronic lung diseases such as tuberculosis, asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Regular consortium meetings help to keep focus on the research agenda. Doctorate students at the RCB participate at the Borstel Biomedical Research School that offers a structured doctorate program, including lectures and regular meetings.

During the last decade, correlations between respiratory diseases, including lung infections and the microbiota became evident. We have identified bacterial strains with probiotic activity in a mouse model. The successful applicant will investigate how immunological factors contribute to the interplay between the microbiota, probiotic agents, and respiratory pathogens, and interpret the findings with respect to evolutionary principles.

  • MSc (or equivalent) in natural or life sciences
  • Strong background in immunology
  • The willingness to work with animals is required. Experience with mouse experiments will be considered as an advantage.
  • Interest in bioinformatics
  • Good command of English

  • A workplace located in a top class research center close to Hamburg
  • Participation in a productive and active team
  • Personal atmosphere and support
  • Payment according to TVöD-VKA (65%) incl. all benefits usually offered in the public sector
  • Family-friendly working conditions and flexible working hours
