The Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) is inviting applications as

Junior Researcher (doctoral student) in International Economics (m/f/d)

in its research center “Trade Policy”.

You will be part of a team with several post-doctoral researchers and PhD students within the Kiel Institute. Being internationally renowned in research and policy consulting, the Kiel Institute provides excellent support to potential candidates who are interested in developing their career in research and policy consulting. The position is strongly research oriented and you will be expected to work on relevant, high-quality research and to publish in leading economics journals. You will also be expected to contribute to the policy activities of the research center, including consulting activities based on a quantitative general equilibrium model that is hosted and continuously developed by the research center. Ideally, this policy work will be based on your research.

We are looking for candidates who meet the following criteria:

  • Research interests related to one or more of the following topics: International trade, quantitative policy analysis, machine learning
  • Excellent Masters degree in economics or a related field
  • Excellent academic record and very strong research potential
  • Excellent English language skills are required, German language skills are a plus
  • Excellent background in statistics and econometrics
  • Experience with programming in R or comparable languages

The planned contract period is 3 years with the possibility of an extension to finish the dissertation within four years, it however depends on the individual qualification time according to (WissZeitVG § 2 Abs. 1 S. 2 and S. 3). The salary will be based on the German public sector pay scale at grade EG 13 TV L. This is a part-time contract (regular 75%, i.e. 29.025 hours per week; further reduction is possible in principle). The envisioned start date is March 1st, 2023 but a later start is also possible.
