Ph.D. position (f/m/d)

Social innovations in the built environment sector

TV-L E 13, 65% (3 years, 26 hours per week)

The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development (IOER) in Dresden is a non-university research center in the field of the spatial sciences and a member of the Leibniz Association. We investigate the characteristics and dynamics of spatial sustainability transformations and their acceleration in the context of the global ecological crisis. The advertised position is allocated to the research area “Resource Efficiency of Settlement Structures”.

Background

The research area "Resource Efficiency of Settlement Structures" investigates to what extent and with which approaches cities, buildings and infrastructures can be transformed towards "zero waste" and "zero emission", taking technical and social innovations into account.

Task description

The position offered focuses on researching social innovations in the built environment sector, aiming to understand their contribution to develop a circular economy. The envisaged research encompasses various types of social innovations such as novel building usage models driven by changing actor preferences and requirements, new governance and policy approaches oriented towards managing a sustainable building stock (beyond technical options), as well as new business and management models in the real estate, construction and demolition industries. Reference needs to be made to different settlement structures, building stocks and building typologies. Implications shall be specified with regard to the use of natural resources (in particular materials and land), the circular economy and climate impacts. The selected candidate will design and implement her/his research plan in close coordination with the IOER research team, and publish the research results in scientific journals.

We expect candidates to have obtained an excellent master degree in a pertinent social science field (e.g. sociology, political science, public administration, spatial planning), in architecture or geography or any other field providing a relevant background. We expect a high level of English language proficiency (CEFR level C1 or higher), as well as strong team working, communication and self-organization skills. Experiences in material flow analysis (MFA) and interdisciplinary research would be an asset.

Employment at IOER

We actively support Ph.D. candidates in the preparation of their thesis through a structured program, providing continuous mentoring, as well as training opportunities regarding scientific approaches, methods and publishing. The selected candidate will be fully integrated into work of the research area, interacting with basic and applied research projects in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
