PhD Position (m/f/d)

DWI - Leibniz Institute for Interactive Materials, Aachen

The DWI – Leibniz-Institute for Interactive Materials is a federal and state funded research institute of the Leibniz Association based on the Melaten Campus of RWTH Aachen University. International young and experienced scientists from various disciplines develop interactive materials based on the principles of nature. It is a location at which people with different talents, experiences and skills work together, in order to learn from one another and generate new knowledge and new methods to create a better quality of life in our world.

DWI invites applications for a position as

PhD student (m/f/d) in the field of Chemistry or Life Sciences

DWI offers you a wide range of possibilities to develop further both professionally and personally in an interdisciplinary setting.

Starting from September 2022, a PhD student position is available in a collaborative project on "Innovative Wound Care Systems" in the research group of Andreas Herrmann, Professor of Macromolecular Materials and Systems.

In this project, new strategies for the treatment of skin diseases including wound infections are being developed on the basis of probiotic bacteria (enclosed in polymers). The probiotics’ production of antimicrobial substances shall be triggered in particular by their pathogen targets. Thus, in addition to the therapeutic aspects, a contribution is made to prevent the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance is envisioned.

The potency of the probiotic bacteria shall be further developed and optimized by means of modern molecular biology techniques and methods from synthetic biology, tailored for the use in functional wound plasters, and tested in pre-clinical studies.

Your Profile:

  • Completed studies (M.Sc. or comparable) in life sciences
  • Highly motivated and team oriented
  • Passion for multidisciplinary research
  • Strong research background in molecular biology and biotechnology
  • Excellent skills in the English language

DWI offers:

  • Exciting and challenging tasks as well as development opportunities in a modern scientific organization
  • An open and team-oriented working atmosphere in an international environment
  • Support by an experienced team
  • Flexible and family-friendly working conditions

The position has to be filled by September 2022.

There is a possibility to fulfill the position in part-time, unless there are compelling professional reasons to do otherwise.
