PhD position (m/f/div) in the field of superconducting dynamos

Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden (IFW)

The Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research Dresden e. V. (IFW Dresden) conducts modern materials research on a scientific basis for the development of new and sustainable materials and technologies. The institute employs an average of 500 people from over 40 nations and, in addition to its scientific tasks, is dedicated to promoting young scientists and engineers. The IFW supports its employees in reconciling work and family life and regularly undergoes the audit berufundfamilie®. Further information at: http://www.ifw-dresden.de.

The research group "Functional Oxides and Superconductors" at the Institute of Metallic Materials (IMW) offers a

PhD position (m/f/div) in the field of superconducting dynamos

Main tasks:

The central research task is to investigate and optimize the use of superconducting dynamos for contactless charging of superconducting coils. This includes the investigation of suitable magnet configurations, the measurement of the currents induced in the coil, the implementation of a superconducting magnetic bearing to reduce losses and the characterization of the efficiency of the entire arrangement. At the same time, the properties and interplay of the superconducting and magnetic components of the dynamo are to be simulated numerically.

Your profile:

Potential candidates (m/w/div) should hold a Masters or Diploma degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electrical Engineering or related topics and must show strong knowledge in experimental research. Preferably, the applicant (m/w/div) has also experience in one or more of the following topics: superconductivity, magnetism, cryogenic technology, electric measurement techniques, materials and property simulation (i.e. COMSOL), computerbased data analysis. We are looking for a candidate with pronounced initiative, creativity, ability to work effectively in a team, as well as fluency of written and spoken English.

What we offer:

  • employment in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service of the federal states (TV-L)
  • A modern, well-equipped workplace on the campus of the Technische Universität Dresden
  • Flexible, family-friendly working hours
  • 30 days vacation per year
  • Company pension scheme (VBL)
  • Benefits for job ticket/Germany ticket
  •  Special annual payment
  •  Capital-forming benefits
  • Company health management (back training, health day with various offers)
  • discounted sports offers from the Dresden University Sports Center
  • job-related further training opportunities and language course
  • Company restaurant with a variety of breakfast and lunch dishes

The salary is based upon the TV-L rules (EG 13, 70%). As part of the work, the applicant (m/w/div) is expected to participate in the lnstitute's structured doctoral program in order to successfully complete the dissertation. The initial appointment is for one year. After a positive first-year evaluation the contract can be extended for another two years. The anticipated start date is September 2025.

IFW Dresden strives for a balanced gender ratio in all areas. In science, IFW Dresden would like to increase the proportion of women and therefore explicitly invites suitably qualified female scientists to apply. The application of severely disabled persons is explicitly welcome.
