The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (Leibniz-IZW) in Berlin is Germany’s premier wildlife research institute, one of seven research institutes in the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V., a member of the Leibniz Association and jointly funded by the German federal and state governments. The IZW focuses on the life histories and mechanisms of evolutionary adaptations of mammals and birds, their limits and their conservation in natural and anthropogenically influenced environments. The institute operates within the fields of evolutionary ecology, ecological dynamics, evolutionary genetics, wildlife diseases, reproduction biology and reproduction management.

IGB, IZW, DPZ, GIGA and IOER are members of the Leibniz Research Alliance “INFECTIONS” (https://www.leibniz-infections21.de/). The aim of this research alliance is to establish a culture of interdisciplinary research and communication across disciplines in order to develop new strategies and methods for early warning systems, improve outbreak management and optimize containment of the spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) pathogens. The research is based on the One Health approach taking into account the interaction of humans, animals and the environment. All research is conducted as collaborative projects between several partner institutes.

The research project is part of the Leibniz Alliance Project Infections, which investigates the diversity and transmission of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We are facing a near future in which antibiotic treatment to control bacterial and fungal infections will no longer be possible, throwing us back to the pre-penicillin era. In order to prevent this from happening, it is essential to understand the sources and spread of AMR in the environment. The successful candidate for this position will investigate the diversity of AMR in water bodies along an urban-rural gradient to assess the risk for AMR occurrence and spread in aquatic bacterial communities as a function of environmental factors. Disturbed urban and relatively undisturbed rural water bodies will be compared to quantify the relative frequency and characteristics of natural AMR compared to AMR diversity caused by urbanization and the use of synthetic antibiotics.

Your tasks:

  • Collection and characterization of water samples in urban and rural environments in the area of Berlin-Brandenburg
  • Preparation of DNA and RNA from water and sediments
  • Preparation of high-throughput sequencing libraries
  • Bioinformatic sequence analysis
  • Determination of physical, chemical and biological environmental variables
  • Statistical analysis of the generated data


  • Completed university degree (Master’s degree) in biology or microbiology
  • Experience in molecular biology, preferentially in high-throughput sequencing and/or bioinformatic analysis
  • Basic experience with statistics; preferentially with use of R
  • Experience in field work
  • Knowledge of programming languages and writing computer scripts is advantageous
  • Fluency in English
