PhD researcher (f/m/d) on business models to promote soil health

Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Müncheberg

The position is part of the working group “Governance of Ecosystem Services”. The central question of this working group is which governance approaches allow for the targeted provisioning of societally desired ecosystem services and biodiversity objectives. A special focus lies on financial incentives and their interactions with regulative law and voluntary cooperation.

In the context of the Horizon Europe project Novasoil (Innovative Business Models for Soil Health) we offer a PhD position to analyze preferences of consumers and farmers on different soil-related ecosystem services and the institutional design of business models to promote soil health.

We offer a 65% position temporarily limited for 36 months – earliest starting date January 2023 - at our location in Müncheberg as:

Your tasks:

  1. conceptualization and development of a research design to analyze preference on business models to promote soil health
  2. investigating consumers preferences for soil-related ecosystem services in a bundle with other ecosystem services and biodiversity
  3. examining farmers preferences for certified nature conservation projects for soil-related ecosystem services
  4. presentation of research results at national/international conferences
  5. publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals
  6. collaboration with other researchers of the working group in the field of preference analysis

Your qualifications:

  1. excellent completion of a Master (or equivalent) in the field of economics, agricultural economics, nature resource management, human geography, (rural) sociology or related subjects
  2. strong statistical skills and demonstrated experience with statistical programming languages
  3. experience in conducting discrete choice experiment (DCE) is an advantage
  4. knowledge on soil-related ecosystem services is beneficial
  5. team spirit, flexibility, high motivation to work in an interdisciplinary environment and the ability to work independently
  6. scientific curiosity and high interest in conducting a doctoral thesis
  7. proficiency in both German and English is required
