in the Unit Molecular Epidemiology

Salary scale 13 of the German public sector salary system (TV-L)

The Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology – BIPS is one of the leading epidemiological research institutions in Germany and a member of the Leibniz Association.

We are currently investigating the food metabolome in children cohorts in a multicenter project funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Agence Nationale de la Recherche (ANR). This international project is coordinated by Dr. Anna Floegel at BIPS and conducted in collaboration with the International Agency for the Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France and the University of Bonn. With this project we aim to improve dietary exposure assessment in children and adolescents by using high-throughput metabolomics technologies. Thereby, novel dietary biomarkers will be identified and validated based on already collected biosamples and data from large children cohorts, such as the European IDEFICS/I.Family cohort (http://www.ifamilystudy.eu). The successful PhD candidate will support the project with the main efforts in data analysis and interpretation of dietary and metabolomics data. The PhD candidate will be supervised at BIPS in Bremen, but will also have the unique chance to receive additional training at the collaboration sites of the project.

We seek an excellent, open-minded and team-spirited PhD candidate. We are looking for a person with a background in epidemiology, nutrition, bioinformatics or related disciplines who is interested in biomarkers, metabolomics and/or childhood nutrition, and who ideally has experience with high-dimensional data analysis.

  • Master’s degree in epidemiology, nutrition, bioinformatics, biostatistics, biology or equivalent qualification
  • Experience in data analysis and multivariate statistics
  • Scientific curiosity and strong motivation to pursue a PhD degree
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Command of English verbal and in writing, together with good academic writing and presentation skills

The following characteristics would be beneficial:

  • Experience with dietary assessment methods (e.g. 24-h dietary recall, FFQ)
  • Experience with high dimensional data analysis (e.g. metabolomics data)
  • Statistical programming skills, preferably in SAS or R

The Unit Molecular Epidemiology runs various national and international studies with a focus on cancer, metabolic and other chronic disorders and investigates the role of biological markers including microbiomics, metabolomics, genetics and epigenetics in its etiological research. Besides the IDEFICS/I.Family cohort, the unit is engaged in various other research consortia like the German National Cohort (GNC), the International Head & Neck Cancer Epidemiology Consortium (INHANCE) and the ISIBELA consortium, and it collaborates closely with the biobank hosted at our institute as well as with the other units and departments of BIPS.

We offer a structured PhD program, exciting research topics, a stimulating international environment, a good infrastructure, close ties to the University of Bremen and an engaged, supportive and cooperative team.

Severely disabled applicants will be given priority conditional on equal professional and personal qualifications. The Institute strives to promote its employees’ work-life balance and has been certified for its family friendliness (audit “berufundfamilie”). We also offer additional support for international scholars to relocate to Germany through the Welcome Center of the UBremen Research Alliance.
