PhD student in natural sciences (m/f/d)

– 65% EG 13 TV-AVH –

with a strong interest in parasites causing Malaria, host parasite interactions and bioinformatics.

The role of extracellular vesicles in pathogenesis of infectious diseases has recently gained lot of attention. There is a growing tendency worldwide to investigate their potential in improving the outcome of complicated infectious diseases. The PhD candidate will work on a project to characterise the role of extracellular vesicles-mediated crosstalk between human brain endothelial cells and cells of the innate immune system during Plasmodium falciparum infection. We have recently implemented new methods to isolate extracellular vesicles from Plasmodium falciparum cell culture. In addition to the flow system that we have established from about 6 years, this system will be used for authentic stimulation of the human endothelial cells in vitro. This project may uncover new possibilities for the use of extracellular vesicles (or their components) in controlling immune responses during malaria infection, either as a therapy or as a target in future immune-modulating treatments.
