PhD student (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB), Halle

The Leibniz Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB), a member of the Leibniz Association and foundation under public law, is an international research institute located on the Weinberg Campus of the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Halle, Germany. The Department of Molecular Signal Processing invites applications to fill the position of a

PhD student (m/f/d)

in the molecular biosciences with a focus on receptor kinase signaling in plant-microbe interactions.

The project

Receptor kinases link the outside of a cell with the inside and enable plants to translate extracellular cues across the plasma membrane to initiate specific signaling cascades in response to exogenous and endogenous stimuli. Thus, plants can adapt to an adverse environment to overcome e.g. pathogen attack or nutrient scarcities. ShRK1 and ShRK2, two MLD-LRR-RKs, are implicated in the accommodation of the obligate biotrophic oomycete and causing agent of downy mildew disease Hyaloperonospora arabidopsidis (Hpa) in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves. To this day, the precise signaling mechanisms of MLD-LRR-RKs in general and ShRKs in particular are, however, still obscure. To shed light on MLD-LRR-RK signaling and regulation, we will employ biochemical, genetic, and cell biology approaches and focus on the role of ShRKs in the Arabidopsis-Hpa interaction. With this we will elucidate the molecular aspects of the Arabidopsis-Hpa association, which will help to understand and manipulate this noxious plant-microbe interaction.

Your profile

Candidates must hold a Diploma or Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, or in a closely related field with research training and experience in one of the following areas: plant molecular biology/genetics, plant cell biology/physiology or protein biochemistry/structural biology. Basic knowledge in plant-microbe interactions would be highly appreciated.

Our offer

We offer a DFG-funded position in a small and enthusiastic team, embedded in a multinational, interdisciplinary, and highly stimulating scientific environment. The IPB is a top-notch research institute focussed on plant biochemistry. State-of-the-art equipment and exceptional expertise provide an ideal set-up to conduct the proposed research and perfectly match the requirements of the project. The appointment will be for three years. Salary and social/health benefits will be based on German law (public employees, TV-L E 13, 65%). We foster your career development by providing qualification and training opportunities in the frame of our doctoral training program and the Leibniz Research School PlantBioChem.
