PhD student (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB), Berlin

The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) is the largest freshwater ecology research institute in Germany. It is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. and the Leibniz-Association (www.wgl.de). The FVB manages 8 large research institutes in Berlin that have close links to all three universities in the German capital. IGB offers excellent laboratory and field facilities for interdisciplinary research, large-scale experimental facilities, and long-term research programs and data sets.

Within the Leibniz Junior Research Group “Global freshwater biodiversity, biogeography and conservation (glowabio)” (https://glowabio.org/) we offer a position for a

PhD student (m/f/d)

in Spatial Freshwater Conservation Planning

Global biodiversity is declining across ecosystems, and freshwater organisms and habitats are among the most threatened. While finding appropriate countermeasures, a key challenge is first to gain a comprehensive picture of the current status of freshwater biodiversity.

The aim of the project is to use latest spatial geo-computational tools to perform freshwater conservation planning globally. Using a suite of spatial environmental layers, the emphasis lies on creating a global high-resolution freshwater habitat characterization that provides the basis for novel spatial conservation planning analyses. Based on the habitat uniqueness and aquatic insect diversity, we expect spatial conservation analyses across spatial scales to highlight distinct patterns and potential gaps in the global network of protected areas. The successful applicant will join a global network of collaborators and apply cutting-edge geo-computational methods using the Yale High-Performance Computing (HPC) system. Moreover, the applicant will receive training in writing and publishing journal articles, disseminating scientific results and giving conference presentations.

We seek a motivated candidate with a strong interest in joining a young and international team working on freshwater biodiversity and biogeography research. Candidates should hold a Master, Diplom, or equivalent in freshwater ecology, environmental sciences, biodiversity informatics, or another relevant field. Experience in spatial conservation planning, GIS and spatial statistical analyses is advantageous, and knowledge in command-line based geo-computation tools such as R, GRASS and GDAL is considered an asset. We consider team-oriented and strong written and oral communication skills in English a pre-requisite.

The position is available for three years. Salary is paid according to the German Public Service (TVöD Bund, 65 % position). In keeping with the IGB's policy regarding gender equality, female applicants are particularly encouraged. Severely disabled applicants with equal qualification and aptitude are given preferential consideration.

Enquiries or questions should be directed to Dr. Sami Domisch (domisch@igb‑berlin.de).
