PhD student position (m/f/d)
Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Leipzig
The Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Leipzig, Germany is a research institute of the Leibniz Association and internationally renowned for excellent research on aerosol and clouds.
In the Modelling Department, we invite applications for a
PhD student position (m/f/d)
to join the research team working within the German-Czech joint project "Transport and Transformation of Atmospheric Aerosol in Central Europe with Focus on Anthropogenic Sources (TRACE)", which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Czech Science Foundation (GAČR). Within the project, scientists from TROPOS and a Czech partner institute investigate the emissions, transport and transformation of atmospheric aerosol in Central Europe. The main objective is the identification of important anthropogenic sources (especially from coal and wood combustion) and the estimation of their impact on air quality. Thereby, state-of-the-art measurement techniques will be combined with detailed source-receptor modelling.
The aim of the PhD project is to identify important emission areas and polluter types of anthropogenic aerosols by means of regional chemical transport modelling, to analyze the processing of the emitted air pollutants and to estimate their influence on pollutant concentrations. The model system COSMO-MUSCAT developed at TROPOS is used for this purpose. The techniques for source-receptor modelling implemented in this system will be adapted, further developed and evaluated using the measurement data of the two planned field experiments. The improved model will be used to better understand the impact of the transported aerosol on local air quality and to evaluate possible reduction scenarios with respect to their efficiency. An interesting question in this context is how the decided shutdown of coal-fired power plants in Germany will affect the pollution and can be supported as effectively as possible by further measures.
Further questions regarding the project can be emailed to Dr. Ralf Wolke, wolke(at)tropos.de.
Applicants will have a University Master degree in meteorology, (atmospheric) physics, mathematics or related environmental sciences, and interest in atmospheric modelling. The PhD student will be expected to present the results at international conferences and to publish in peer-reviewed journals. Fluent English in written and oral form is mandatory. Experience in aerosol research and atmospheric modelling is of advantage.
We are offering the possibility to work in an interdisciplinary team at a highly renowned atmospheric research institute, and in one of the most attractive cities in Germany. In addition, there is the opportunity to join the lively Leipzig Graduate School on Clouds, Aerosol and Radiation.
The employment is limited to three years with possible extension to four years. The salary level is according to the German public service regulation (65% TV-L 13) including the attractive social benefits of the public sector. We specifically invite female candidates to apply. Among candidates of equal aptitude and qualifications, preference will be given to a disabled person.
