PhD student/Researcher Data Science & Natural Language Processing (m/f/d)

 (Salary group 13 TV-L, working time 75%, limited to 31.12.2024) 

The department Knowledge Technologies for the Social Sciences (KTS) conducts research at the intersection of information retrieval, natural language processing, semantic technologies and human information interaction as foundation for innovative web portals and platforms for the search and use of research data. KTS innovations are based on a state-of-the-art software stack and research-based innovations in the aforementioned fields.

In the context of the BMBF funded project “KB Mining”, the position develops innovative integrated services based on large-scale bibliometric data sources. Among others, the goal is to disambiguate and link entities of various types in order to improve search in - and reusability of - bibliographic data by improving the research network Competence Centre for Bibliometrics.

Your tasks will be:

  • Applied research in fields such as Information Retrieval, record linking, Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, Knowledge Graphs - with the aim to disambiguate information (in particular author mentions) in large document collections such as Web of Science and Scopus
  • Design and implementation of further services such as Named Entity Recognition and automated linking against web vocabularies
  • Summarization, publication and presentation of project results
  • Development of research prototypes and transfer of research outcomes into GESIS portals
  • Cooperation and exchange with partners in the Competence Centre for Bibliometrics and other relevant communities (e.g. information retrieval, extraction and linking, as well as research data management)

Your profile:

  • Good university degree (master's/diploma or equivalent) in computer science, data science or a comparable subject
  • Very good experience in software development with Python, Elasticsearch, Javascript, web technologies and Database database technologies
  • Good expertise in the areas of semantic technologies, retrieval evaluation, knowledge graphs
  • Good knowledge of English, verbal and written communication skills in German
