PhD Students (m/f/d) Graduate School „Infection“ of the Leibniz Center Infection

Description of the project:

The technical development of human and murine organoids has made significant progress in recent years, so that they increasingly represent an alternative to animal models. New technological developments in this field include in particular long-term cultures of the skin, the gastrointestinal tract, or the liver. We have recently developed co-culture systems for immune cells and parenchymal cells by careful assessment and adaptation of the culture medium conditions and plan to apply this technology to model parasitic infections with murine and human liver organoids and innate immune cells crucially involved in the control of infection like monocytes and neutrophils. We will establish an infection model for E. histolytica and Leishmania with 3-D murine liver organoids co-cultured with murine monocytes/neutrophils in order to characterize tissue, parasite and immune cell specific responses by combining state of the art parasitology, immunology and imaging techniques. Having established the murine liver organoid co-culture model, we would transfer the system to human organoids with the aim to influence monocyte/neutrophil recruitment.

The Leibniz Center Infection is a strategic alliance of the North German Leibniz Institutes the BNITM, Research Center Borstel – Leibniz Lung Center (FZB) and Heinrich Pette Institute, Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI). LCI-Graduates will work on cooperative projects from two LCI institutes in joint supervision. It is mandatory for each graduate to conduct at least 3 months of the research at the cooperating institute.

Your profile:

  • Diploma/Master degree or equivalent in life sciences
  • Knowledge in the fields of parasitic infection
  • Practical experience in immunology and cell culture
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills
  • Proficiency in English (written and spoken)
  • Able to work independently and to develop creative work

Starting date will be beginning of 2021 or later. The position is initially limited to 3 years and is remunerated with 50% E 13 TV-AVH according to the rules of the public service under the TV-AVH (collective agreement of the “Arbeitsrechtliche Vereinigung Hamburg“).
