The Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), a research-driven infrastructure based at DIW Berlin, is one of the largest and longest running multidisciplinary panel studies worldwide, and currently surveys around 30,000 people in nearly 15,000 households. SOEP aims to capture social change and thus handles a constant stream of new and diverse topics and tasks. Its data collection and generation adhere to the concept of the survey or data life cycle.

Post-doctoral researcher (f/m/div)

(Full-time at 39 hours per week, part-time possible)

The position will be part of the multi-disciplinary research project “Groups put at Particular Risk by COVID 19 (GaPRisk),” funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), which brings together economists, epidemiologists, public health researcher, sociologists and psychologists from four institutions: DIW/SOEP, University of Bielefeld, Robert Koch Institute and Freie Universität Berlin: www.gap-risk.de

The aim of the project is to examine how the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic affects distinct social and at-risk groups in Germany, what the consequences of the pandemic are for societal inequalities, and what role welfare state measures play. The interdisciplinary project team will apply descriptive and causal statistical methods and use a unique integrated dataset, comprising the SOEP, SOEP-CoV (a survey of a subsample of the SOEP during the pandemic lockdowns), and blood and saliva tests from SOEP respondents (in collaboration with the Robert Koch Institute).

You are paid according to the collective agreement for the public sector (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), which includes an annual bonus as well as a company pension with VBL Ost. 

The office is located in the middle of Berlin-Mitte convenient to public transportation. As a DIW Berlin employee, you are eligible for a reduced VBB-Firmenticket that is partially subsidized. 

Your tasks and responsibilities:

•    Conducting research as part of the above-mentioned project

•    Coordinating the research group and project meetings

•    Developing the data infrastructure (linking SOEP, SOEP-CoV, and other auxiliary datasets) and producing documentation on the data

•    Publishing peer-reviewed articles in leading international journals

•    Producing policy-relevant reports and project deliverables

Your qualifications:

•    Outstanding dissertation in economics, quantitative methods or a related discipline

•    Excellent knowledge of micro econometric, quantitative empirical and causal methods

•    Strong research agenda aligned with the project aims

•    Experience with survey data 

•    Strong publication record

•    Experience in working on and willingness to contribute to a multi-disciplinary research project that brings together researchers from epidemiology, medical research, economics, and other social sciences 

•    Experience in coordinating a research group 

•    Basic knowledge of Germany’s federal government and broader political system

•    Excellent writing skills and very good command of English and German

The position is limited until 30 September 2025. Remuneration is paid according to TVöD Bund, salary group E14.
