Postdoc (f/m/d)

Paul Drude Institute for Solid State Electronics (PDI), Berlin

The Paul-Drude-Institut für Festkörperelektronik (PDI) performs basic research as a lively symbiosis of materials science and solid state physics. Our research aims at inspiring and demonstrating new functionalities for future information technologies. As a member of the Leibniz-Gemeinschaft and Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. we are an independent research institute with about 100 employees. We are located in the very heart of the city near Gendarmenmarkt.

Postdoc (f/m/d)

for epitaxy and atomic-scale characterization of (Al,Sc)N nanowires

The substantial lattice deformation obtained by incorporating Sc atoms in AlN results in exceptional piezoelectric properties, an effect which attracts increasing attention in the field of nitride semiconductors. At the PDI, we have received funding for developing, in collaboration with two French partners located in Grenoble, a novel type of piezoelectric energy harvester based on (Al,Sc)N nanowires. The final device should provide enough energy to power a small sensor while having a reduced environmental footprint. The first task of the Postdoc will be to develop the molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) of (Al,Sc)N nanowire ensembles that are suitable for energy harvesting. In this regard, the candidate will benefit from the long-standing expertise of the PDI in the MBE of nitride nanowires and will collaborate with a Postdoc currently pursuing the MBE of (Al,Sc)N films. The second task is to perform in-depth (scanning) transmission electron microscopy (S-TEM) of the highly crystalline nanowires, to expand further the understanding of the peculiar material properties. Thereby, it will be essential to combine high-resolution structural imaging with analytical STEM methods. Research at PDI profits from excellent facilities for MBE and TEM as well as the close collaboration with highly competent senior scientists.

You should have a PhD in the field of inorganic semiconductors, experience with MBE or with TEM and the ambition to broaden your expertise to both. We are looking for a new colleague who enjoys working in a highly motivated team of international researchers and technicians.

This position is limited to three years. Payment is according to TVöD Bund (Treaty for German public service). PDI is pursuing a gender equality policy. Women are therefore particularly encouraged to apply. Among equally qualified applicants preference will be given to disabled candidates.

Please submit your application in pdf format using the key word “AlScN” in the subject via email by December 14, 2021 to jobs(at)pdi-berlin.de, including a dedicated cover letter, CV, publication list, letter(s) of recommendation, diploma(s), and transcript(s).
