Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Rostock University (IAP), Kühlungsborn
Position announcement (2021-04 UA-ICON)
UA-ICON application on the mesopause region
The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is member of the Leibniz Association with research focus on the middle atmosphere. It closely cooperates with the University of Rostock and is part of their teaching program. The IAP is funded in equal parts from federal and state sources, has an annual budget of about 7 Mio Euro and employs about 70 people.
The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) offers a Postdoctoral position (m/f/d) in the Theory and Modeling Department. The position is initially available for two years, with the possibility for a longer extension depending on funding and performance. The salary is according to class EG 13 TV-L, Tarifgebiet Ost commensurate with experience. Candidates who fulfill the requirements for temporal contracts according to § 2 WissZeitVG will be considered.
UA-ICON is a recent development of the Upper-Atmosphere extension of the ICOsahedral Non-hydrostatic model of the lower and middle atmosphere. The goal of IAP applying UA-ICON is to investigate the mesopause region with different temporal and spatial resolutions. UA-ICON shall be validated for how physical processes such as planetary waves, gravity waves and tides influence the meso-scale variability of the mesopause and for how robust mesospheric large-scale circulation patterns are represented in the model. The holder of the announced position will install and execute UA-ICON on IAP’s high-performance computers, set up simulation experiments with appropriate boundary conditions, do documented archiving, and support the scientific validation.
The required qualifications are:
- PhD in meteorology, physics, mathematics, computer sciences or a related field
- Experience in the use of numerical circulation models, preferably UA-ICON
- Publications in atmospheric physics, preferably on the mesopause region
- Excellent communication skills in English
The IAP offers an attractive working place near the Baltic Sea, with modern equipment, engagement in international research, participation in the professional pension system (VBL), and working conditions according to the tariff agreement on public services (TV-L). The IAP supports a family-friendly human resource policy and is certified with the audit "berufundfamilie" ('career and family'). It aims to increase participation of women in fields where they are under-represented. Women are explicitly invited to apply. The IAP gives special consideration to applications by handicapped persons.
Applicants are invited to submit their complete files in English or German (cover letter, curriculum vitae, publication list, copy of certificates, possibly testimonies and references) referring to the code number 2021-04 UA-ICON until a suitable candidate is found, preferably in a single PDF document, to Angelika Kurreck, kurreck(at)iap-kborn.de.
