PostDoc position (f/m/d) coastal sea research on marine biohazards and ecosystem changes

The Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering a

Scientist position (f/m/d)

on the topic ‘coastal sea research on marine biohazards and ecosystem changes’

to be filled from April 1, 2025, to November 30, 2027. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale, level EG 13. The position can be filled on a flexible part-time basis (minimum 32 hours/week) or full-time (40 hours/week). This is a Post-Doctoral position.

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme. The Research Unit Coastal Sea and Society covers a wide spectrum of applied and interdisciplinary coastal and marine research.

What will be your tasks?

The position focusses on marine biohazards and changes in coastal and marine ecosystems as part of the DAM-PrimePrevention and DAM-CoastalFutures II projects. The work involves data-driven and model-based analyses of how extreme weather events (e.g., storms, floods, heatwaves) impact coastal and marine biohazards (e.g., cyanobacteria blooms, harmful organisms, pathogens) across various spatial and temporal scales. Additionally, the tasks will include marine ecosystem service assessments and evaluating the long-term changes in aquatic ecosystems. The primary geographic focus will be the Baltic Sea and German coastal waters.

What do we expect from you?

A strong academic background in coastal or marine environmental sciences, or oceanography, is mandatory (Master’s/Diploma with at least a good grade). A completed or nearly completed PhD in one of these fields is required. Doctorate must be completed by the time of hiring. Excellent proficiency in English and a basic knowledge of German are mandatory.

Important selection criteria are:

• A good international publication record (relative to the professional career) in relevant topics
• Experience in spatial data analysis using geographic information systems (GIS), programming languages (R, Python), and multivariate statistics
• Experience in particle-tracking simulations as well as handling, extracting and processing of large datasets resulting from model simulations
• Good knowledge of the Baltic Sea ecosystem and biohazards (e.g. cyanobacteria blooms, harmful organisms, pathogens) as well as European coastal and marine policies
• Research experience in coastal and marine systems, the ability to work independently as well as within a team, and scientific writing and reporting skills
• Experience in teaching and supervision of students
