PostDoc position (f/m/d)

in the Marine Geology Department

with a percentage of 100 (40 h/week) from 15.02.2025 to 31.12.2027.

Remuneration is paid in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L, Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder) salary scale at level TV-L EG 13.

The position is to be filled on a flexible part-time or full-time basis.  The post is part-time but with a minimum of 30 hours per week or by 2 employees to be filled (job sharing).

Who are we?

The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.

The position will be in the Marine Geophysics working group. The team with expertise in geology, geophysics and environmental sciences works, among other things, on the mapping of marine habitats using remote sensing and the optimisation of measurement and evaluation methods. The work is carried out in an international context as well as in co-operation with German federal authorities. One focus is the optimisation of geophysical mapping routines for habitats and sediments.

What will be your tasks?

The advertised position is part of the project OTC-SMART: Smart Marine Data Analysis in Real Time which is part of the BMBF-funded future cluster ‘Rostock Ocean Technology Campus’. Together with partners from Subsea Europe Services GmbH and the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the project aims to develop a software for the real-time analysis of hydroacoustic data from autonomous measurement platforms. For real-time analysis, it is essential to recognise the acoustic, habitat-specific signatures. Your task is to create a catalogue that describes the hydroacoustic properties (primarily recorded with multibeam echo sounders) of different habitats in the Baltic Sea and serves as a basis for real-time evaluation. The new research results will be presented in international journals and conferences.

What will be your tasks?

The basic requirement is a successful university degree (Master's, Diploma or equivalent) in the fields of geosciences, geophysics, environmental sciences, or a comparable subject and a completed doctorate or a doctoral process in the final phase (doctorate must be available at the latest at the time of recruitment).

You should be very experienced in the acquisition, and processing of hydroacoustic data (especially multibeam echo sounders). Equally important are experiences in the interpretation of sediments, bedforms and marine habitats. Programming skills are an advantage. We expect an interest in sea-going work and independent data acquisition in the Baltic Sea. Furthermore, a very good command of English is mandatory.
