Postdoc position (m/f/d)
Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Rostock University (IAP), Kühlungsborn
for lidar wind soundings within the project AMUN
The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is an independent member of the Leibniz Association with its research focus in the middle atmosphere.
The job: The IAP department Optical Soundings and Sounding Rockets offers a Postdoctoral researcher position (m/f/d), limited for the duration of three years. Remuneration will be based on German public service salary scale TV-L up to salary group 13. Temporal limits are based on public law (§ 2 WissZeitVG).
The work tasks: The IAP develops and installs a Doppler wind lidar for soundings in the mesosphere as part of the DFG project AMUN (“Analyzing the motion of the middle atmosphere using nighttime RMR-lidar observations at the midlatitude station Kühlungsborn“). Wind soundings are crucial for the understanding of the energy budget of the atmosphere. Unfortunately, these measurements are very complex and therefore rare in the middle atmosphere between 30 and 80 km altitude. The proposed lidar complements the existing Rayleigh-Mie-Raman lidar for temperature and aerosol soundings. Additionally, radiosondes and radar wind data are available at our site.
The tasks will be
- Participation in development and construction of the new lidar as well as participation in lidar soundings (together with project PI and PhD student)
- Software development for calculation of wind profiles from lidar returns
- Geophysical evaluation of wind measurements
Our demands: The candidate should comply with the following demands:
- Holding a PhD with very good marks in physics, meteorology or a related discipline
- Strong background in lidar technology, preferably middle-atmosphere lidars
- Good knowledge in computer programming, preferably in Python
- Large interest in geophysical questions, a high level of self-organization and motivation.
Our offer: The Leibniz-Institute of Atmospheric Physics offers a diversified and challenging position in an internationally-oriented institution in close proximity to the Baltic Sea, an excellent work infrastructure, and participation in international research.
The IAP offers participation in the professional pension system (VBL). The IAP supports a family-friendly human resource policy. It aims to increase participation of women where they are under-represented. Therefore, women are explicitly invited to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in case of equal qualification.
The application: Applicants are invited to submit their convincing application (cover letter, curriculum vitae, copy of certificates, possibly testimonies and references) referring to the code numbers 2020-09 to
Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics
