PostDoc (Tenure Track) in the department Marine Geology
in full time (40 h/week) for the next possible date.
In case of best fulfilment of the requirements (especially scientific performance (publications and other scientific achievements), experiences in other institutes and abroad, positive external review) an immediate permanent position is possible. Otherwise, a tenure-track procedure (up to 3 years with extension option up to 5 years) is intended to develop the missing competencies. The prerequisite for this is, that qualification times according to § 2 WissZeitVG are still available or a temporary employment based on § 14 Abs. 2 TzBfG is possible. Remuneration is paid in accordance with the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L , Public Sector Collective Agreement on Länder) salary scale at level TV-L EG 13.
The position is to be filled on a flexible part-time or full-time basis but with a minimum of 30 hours per week.
Who are we?
The IOW is an independent research institute of the Leibniz Association for which equal opportunities, family friendliness and work-life balance are very important. Our research focus is on the coastal and marginal seas, especially the Baltic Sea. The staff of the four sections Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology works interdisciplinary within a joint research programme.
What will be your tasks?
In this research focus we will study shallow coastal waters of the Baltic Sea in all their diversity. Your tasks will be geological and geophysical research in close cooperation with researchers in biogeochemistry, biology and oceanography. The research will focus on quantifying the heterogeneity of the seafloor and shallow subsurface at different size scales (mm to km). Local geological history, oceanography and sediment dynamics, biological habitats and bioturbation, and anthropogenic influences are to be considered and parameterized. The publication of research results as well as the acquisition of further third-party funding in this research field is expected.
The research will be conducted using ship-based geological and hydroacoustic techniques, lander systems as well as with satellite and drone-based optical methods.
What do we expect from you?
- Completed scientific higher education (master's degree, diploma orquivalent) in the fields of geology or geophysics or a comparable field, as well as a completed doctorate in this field. A publication record appropriate to the duration of the scientific career is expected.
- Proven knowledge of sedimentology
- Proven knowledge of hydroacoustic measurement methods and data evaluation
- In-depth knowledge of at least one high-level programming language (Matlab, Python)
- Confident command of the English language
Desirable are furthermore:
- Experience in the acquisition of third-party funding projects
- Experience in the use and development of stationary measurement
techniques (e.g. adaptation of lander systems for use in shallow water)
- Experience in leading scientific expeditions or in the successful planning, implementation and evaluation of research campaigns in shallow water
- Experience in optical methods (e.g. structure from motion, laser line scanning, satellite-based remote sensing, lidar, drones)
- Knowledge of oceanography
- Knowledge of habitat mapping in the Baltic Sea
