Postdoctoral Research Fellow (f/m/d)

The WZB is a publicly financed international social science institution that conducts basic research that is theory-based and problem-oriented. The offered position is embedded in a large research cluster on political and religious radicalization in Germany called ‘Monitoring System and Transfer Platform Radicalization’ (MOTRA). The project at the WZB establishes a systematic and encompassing protest monitoring based on three types of data collection: (a) protest event analysis; (b) content analysis of public debates; and (c) in-depth analysis of actors involved in political violence. The project at the WZB is part of an interdisciplinary research team and is jointly led by Edgar Grande, Swen Hutter, and Ruud Koopmans. The successful candidate will focus on project part (b), analysing discursive opportunity structures and escalation dynamics linked to protest and political violence, and on the integration of the different project parts.


  • Preparation of manual and automated content analysis of public debates
  • Analysis of escalation dynamics in public debates
  • Integration of data collection from different project parts
  • Preparation of reports and scientific publications
  • Presentation of project results in workshops and conferences
  • Exchange and coordination with partners in the consortium


  • Very good doctoral degree in political science, sociology, communication science or a related discipline
  • Very good knowledge of quantitative research methods and statistics
  • Advanced skills in Stata, R or any other syntax-based statistics software
  • Good knowledge of research literature on political conflict, protest and radicalisation
  • Ability to work in a team and independently
  • Very good knowledge of German and English


  • Experience in the analysis of public debates
  • Interest and knowledge in research areas such as new protest movements, terrorism studies, ecological movements, and left-wing radicalism or extremism
  • Experience in scientific project work
  • Thematically relevant peer-reviewed publications

Working time: 100% of regular weekly working time (currently 39 hours)

Salary: E 13 TVöD Bund
