The Leibniz Centre for Archaeology (LEIZA), a member of the Leibniz Association, is a globally active archaeological research institute and museum with its headquarters in Mainz and additional sites in Neuwied, Mayen and Schleswig. Since its foundation in 1852, the museum has been dedicated to the material legacy of three million years of human history with the aim of understanding human behaviour and actions as well as the development and transformation of societies.

For our Laboratory of Traceology and Controlled Experiments (TraCEr), at MONREPOS, Neuwied (Germany) we seek to find a

postdoctoral researcher in Use-wear analysis (Palaeolithic Archaeology) (f/m/d)

(EG 13 TV-L, full-time or part-time) ideally starting September 2024

The length of the appointment is 3 years.

The position is part of the recently funded DFG research (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft) project NeanderCloud: New and old technologies to understand past human tool technology, design, and use.

Research project and applicant requirements:

The NeanderCloud project will focus on the investigation of Late Middle Palaeolithic (LMP) asymmetric tools, the so-called Keilmesser, to understand their origin, nature, and pre-eminence within the LMP industries in Central and Eastern Europe. Through a multi-scale analysis, the project aims at a unique agenda that combines methods such as techno-typological and raw material studies, use-wear analysis, and controlled experiments. This combination of data requires a statistical tool for a transparent and reproducible workflow for data analysis and data modeling. By providing a pipelined system in the cloud with a web interface, we aim to provide fully reproducible results and a system adoptable by a wide audience.

The position entails overseeing the use-wear study, together with the design, and execution of laboratory experiments on stone tools, as well as communication and exchange with the scientific computing team members. The ideal candidate will have a PhD and a creative and significant track record on innovative approaches to use-wear analysis with applications to Palaeolithic archaeology. An openness to conducting both controlled and replicative experiments and a dedication to the development of rigorous and open standards is essential. Prior experience with controlled experiments, tribology, advanced microscopy techniques, and computer programming is desirable.

The TraCEr lab in LEIZA aims to carry out ground-breaking functional studies that combine 1) methodological development (controlled experiments, measuring raw material properties, and high-resolution 3D quantification methods on use-wear analysis), and 2) fundamental archaeological research. The MONREPOS Archaeological Research Centre and Museum is a part of the Leibniz-Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA). Situated at Monrepos Castle near Neuwied in the Central Rhineland of Germany, the Centre examines the historical processes of the evolution of hominin behaviour through the contextualized and interdisciplinary study of Pleistocene and early Holocene material remains. Department languages are German and English.
