The Leibniz Institute for Food Systems Biology at the Technical University of Munich (Leibniz- LSB@TUM), a legal foundation under civil law in Freising, is a research institution of the Leibniz Association that combines methods of biomolecular basic research with analysis methods of bioinformatics and analytical high-performance technologies to investigate the complex interplay between the human organism and food ingredients.

Postdoctoral Scientist – Bioinformatics & Machine Learning (m/f/d)

to start on 01.07.2021 (100% TV-L 13). The position is to be filled for a period of 2 years.

Research project

You will help us pioneering food systems biology approaches, focusing on food science and food related health. The specific objectives of the project will be developed in relation to the candidate’s experience and interests.

Your area of responsibility includes
  • The development of models, workflows and tools to analyse omics data
  • The analysis of omics and single cell data
  • Modelling molecular interaction networks of the olfactory system
  • Interdisciplinary collaborations with experimental groups at the LSB

The ideal applicant should have experience in bioinformatics and/or machine learning, and/or systems biology. A candidate with a strong background in machine learning, will have the opportunity to develop his career in food science and food related health. With the support from the group leader, the candidate should want to aim for his own research group after two years (e.g., through a DFG, ERC or Leibniz grant proposal).


Work environment:

You will become part of Section III on In-silico Biology and Machine Learning which was re-established in November 2020. Working together with Olaf Wolkenhauer (guest professor at the LSB) you will complement the groups of Antonella Di Pizio (Molecular Modelling) and Andreas Dunkel (Integrated Food Systems Analysis). The candidate has access to collaborators and state of the art technologies in Sections I and II of the LSB. Through O Wolkenhauer, the project also implies a close collaboration with the Dept of Systems Biology & Bioinformatics at the University of Rostock (www.sbi.uni-rostock.de).
