Research assistant (PhD student) (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics at the Rostock University (IAP), Kühlungsborn

Position announcement Nr. 2021-02 (Schaefer-Rolffs)

PhD student in the project Transregio CRC-181 "Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean”

The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) is member of the Leibniz Association with research focus on the middle atmosphere. It closely cooperates with the University of Rostock and is part of their teaching program. The IAP is funded in equal parts from federal and state sources, has an annual budget of about 8,5 Mio Euro and employs about 70 people.

The Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP) offers a 3-year position as

PhD student (m/f/d)

starting as soon as possible in the Theory and Modeling Department. The salary is according to class EG 13 TV-L, Tarifgebiet Ost (66%). Only candidates can be considered who fulfill the requirements for temporal contracts according to § 2 WissZeitVG.

Tasks: Within the framework of the GRF research project CRC-181 "Energy Transfers in Atmosphere and Ocean", the turbulence parameterization gDSM developed at the IAP will be further developed. This parameterization will be used in the global model KMCM to investigate in particular the generation of available potential energy and the conversion into kinetic energy up to the mesosphere. The simulations will be compared against four-dimensional lidar measurements to investigate how well gravity waves are resolved in the model. The aim is to use these results to validate the MS-GWaM and IDEMIX-a gravity wave parameterizations developed in other CRC subprojects.

The work will include:

  • Theoretical development and programming of the turbulence model
  • Independent preparation and realization of suitable simulations
  • Comparison with other data sets (lidar, gravity wave parameterization etc.)
  • Development and evaluation of physical concepts to understand the results

Requirements:

  • Good university degree (diploma/master) in physics, meteorology or a related field
  • Interest in theoretical meteorology and its geophysical issues
  • Good knowledge of scientific programming (FORTRAN, C++, etc.) and interest in working with parallel computers
  • Great interest in science, a high degree of self-organization and dedication

The IAP offers an attractive working place near the Baltic Sea, with modern equipment, engagement in international research, participation in the professional pension system (VBL), and working conditions according to the tariff agreement on public services (TV-L).

The CRC enables comprehensive training and networking in the scientific community through its own graduate school, annual winter schools and regular exchange between subprojects.

The IAP supports a family-friendly human resource policy. It aims to increase participation of women where they are under-represented. Women are explicitly invited to apply. The IAP also aims to employ more persons with disabilities.

Applicants are invited to submit their complete files (cover letter, curriculum vitae, copy of certificates, possibly testimonies and references) referring to the code number 2021-02 (Schaefer-Rolffs) until a suitable candidate is found, preferably in a single PDF document, to the
