The Leibniz Institute of Ecological Urban and Regional Development is a non-university research center in the field of the spatial sciences and a member of the Leibniz- Association. Our subject is the sustainable development and transformation of cities and regions in the context of the global human-ecological crisis.

Sustainable land use and spatial structure are of particular importance in this context. The requirements for regenerative energy production, biodiversity promotion, economical and circular resource use, and climate resilience are increasingly coming into conflict with each other in limited spaces. To answer the related questions, small-scale data, analyses, simulations, scenarios and assessments are needed for research purposes and to support decision-making in various contexts.

Therefore, the Institute plans to establish an IOER Research Data Center (IOER-FDZ) as of January 1, 2023 and to operate it as part of the National Research Data Infrastructure (NFDI) and the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). ). It inaugurates on the established research data infrastructure of the IOER - the "Monitor of Settlement and Spatial Development (IOER Monitor)" - and connects all research areas of the institute. The IOER-RDC will be coordinated under the research area "Spatial Information and Modelling".

The candidate of the advertised position is expected to contribute to developing foundations for the development of the research data repositories as well as advanced methods of data collection, integration and result visualization. The position is assigned to the above-mentioned research area and is part of an interdisciplinary team that builds and operates the IOER Research Data Center.

Job Description/ Task/ Position specific background

By combining expertise from the fields of Geographical Information Science, Artificial Intelligence and Spatial Sustainability Science, innovative research approaches will be developed to address the challenges and opportunities of the recent rapid increase in spatial data offerings at high spatial and temporal resolution. This includes remote sensing data, image data, sensor data, mobile phone data, VGI, social media, topo-graphic maps as well as access to data services of the NFDI's. In addition to information retrieval and user-specific and application-related processing, the focus is on classifications, forecasts as well as visualizations. This requires a confident application of advanced methods of statistical and spatial data analysis, confident processing of large data sets with as well as programming skills in Python (incl. CV relevant modules), JScript, R and XML. Knowledge of geospatial tools and experience in AI/machine learning frameworks (such as Keras, TensorFlow, and the like) is an advantage.

Applicants are also expected to contribute to the development of basic principles for the development of research data resources as well as advanced methods of data collection, integration and visualization of results. The position is assigned to the above-mentioned research area and is part of an interdisciplinary team that builds and operates the IOER Research Data Center.

Expected skills and competencies:

  • Very good university degree (Master, Diploma) in Geoinformatics or Computer Vision
  • Dissertation in a relevant discipline as well as participation in publications in relevant topics would be advantageous
  • independent, structured and creative work, as well as a high degree of motivation
  • distinct ability to work in a team and interdisciplinary competence
  • German and English language skills (CEFR level C1 or higher)
