Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), Müncheberg

The mission of the Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF) as a nationally and internationally active research institute is to deliver solutions for an ecologically, economically and socially sustainable agriculture – together with society. ZALF is a member of the Leibniz Association and is located in Müncheberg (approx. 35 minutes by regional train from Berlin-Lichtenberg). It also maintains a research station with further locations in Dedelow and Paulinenaue.

The overall goal of the Integrated Priority Project (IPP) “Towards a better understanding and modelling the interactions between water and carbon dynamics at agricultural used wetlands” founded by ZALF is the improved understanding of the water and carbon cycle and their interaction at shallow groundwater sites. To record the processes involved in the water and material cycle, we combine modern weighable groundwater lysimeters with automatic chamber systems to measure CO2 exchange under defined hydrological and geochemical boundary conditions. We want to investigate what contribution such a methodical approach can deliver for the clarification, quantification and more precise modelling of the interactions between water, carbon cycles in agricultural used shallow groundwater sites. Results should improve the simulation performance of models and the assessment of future climate change scenarios. They contribute to the development of measures to further reduce GHG emissions and negative impacts on ecosystem services of sensitive lowland regions.

Your tasks:

  • Ensuring the conductance of all investigations on the newly designed model experiment to elucidate the interactions between water, carbon and nitrogen cycles of a meadow close to groundwater (Brandenburg/Spreewald)
  • Technical instruction of the technical staff working on the model experiment 
  • Expertise in/willingness to acquire special knowledge in the field of trace gas measurements and analysis
  • Calculation, modelling and analysis of automatically recorded trace gas fluxes and their control factors, modelling of cumulative gas exchange rates, preparation of system C/N balances
  • Quality control of all (gas-side) data collected within the framework of the model experiment and timely transfer of these data to a central project database
  • Independent preparation of scientific publications based on the results of the model experiment, participation in project workshops, presentation of the results at scientific conferences

Your qualifications:

  • A university degree in agriculture, biology, geoecology, geography or related disciplines
  • Expertise and experience in the field of field measurement data acquisition, processing, preparation and storage as well as data preparation and visualization
  • Expertise in plant cultivation, field trials, and experience in understanding the interactions between land use, C- and N-dynamics
  • Experience with plant and soil analyses as well as the performance and evaluation of trace gas measurements using special scripts, e.g. based on the programming language R
  • Very good knowledge of common Microsoft Office applications
  • Programming experience/knowledge (e.g., R, Python, Julia, C++)
  • Very good knowledge of English
  • Driving license class B and driving experience
