Research Scientist (PostDoc) (*gn)
starting at the earliest possible date and limited until March 31th 2024. Remuneration is paid depending on the individual qualification and in accordance with the TV-L EG 13. The position is also suitable for part-time employment with at least 30 working hours per week.
The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with regional focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Marine Geology, Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, and Biological Oceanography) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.
The position is part of the BMBF-funded project "Carbon storage in German Coastal Seas - Stability, vulnerability and perspectives (CARBOSTORE)". In collaboration with seven national partner institutions the stability and vulnerability of different carbon reservoirs will be investigated in the German coastal waters of the North- and Baltic Seas. The anthropogenic pressure on the coastal environment and the climate change-induced stress have the potential to change the biogeochemistry of marine ecosystems. In this project, we aim to investigate if and to what extent carbon storage has or will be impacted by these stresses.
The position holder will be responsible for analyzing existing data on the Baltic Sea carbon system as well as collecting further data to fill existing knowledge gaps in the context of a research cruise. The focus of the work is to narrow down the causes for the increase of alkalinity in the Baltic Sea over the last decades and to identify the underlying processes.
The tasks include in detail:
- Data compilation of existing data on carbon parameters (data mining)
- Analysis of trends with focus on alkalinity increase in different water bodies and their relevance for the acidification of the Baltic Sea
- Derivation of possible drivers and mechanisms of the observed trends
- Planning and execution of a marine research expedition to collect environmental parameters to further delineate the causes
- Supporting the development of appropriate process descriptions for biogeochemical modeling
- Preparation of scientific manuscripts and reports
Necessary qualification of the candidate
- Successful PhD thesis in the field of marine (bio)geochemistry or marine chemistry or a related field
- Experience in the collection, processing, and interpretation of biogeochemical data
- Demonstrated aptitude for scientific writing
Preferable additional qualifications
- Expertise in the field of marine carbon system chemistry
- Experience in statistical analysis of large data sets using appropriate program packages (e.g. MatLab, R, Python)
- Willingness and ability to work at sea
- Experience with interdisciplinary research
The ability to work in a team as well as good to very good knowledge of the English language is essential for the cooperation with international partners.
