Scientist (m/f/d)

Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy (ATB), Potsdam

The Leibniz Institute for Agricultural Engineering and Bioeconomy is a pioneer and a driver of bioeconomy research. We create the scientific foundation to transform agricultural, food, industrial and energy systems into a comprehensive bio-based circular economy. We develop and integrate techniques, processes and management strategies, effectively converging technologies to intelligently crosslink highly diverse bioeconomic production systems and to control them in a knowledge-based, adaptive and largely automated manner. We conduct research in dialogue with society - knowledge-motivated and application-inspired.

As part of the BMEL/FNR-funded project "Process development for reducing methane emissions during liquid manure and digestate storage with the option to maintain and reactivate the methane potential for biogas production (EMeRGE)” the following position is to be filled as soon as possible

Scientist (m/f/d)

for the research field „Microbiome management for high yield energy production, enhancing fertilizer quality and reducing negative environmental impacts“.

The objective of the collaborative project is to reduce methane emissions from manure storage by the addition of calcium cyanamide while maintaining and reactivating the methane potential for subsequent biogas production and increasing the fertilizer quality of the remaining digestates. The successful applicant will investigate the microbiome structure and dynamic variations across the entire process chain comprising liquid manure storage, biogas production and field application of manure and digestate. The position is assigned to the research group “System microbiology” in close cooperation with the research groups “Bioengineering” and “Bioeconomic system modelling” at ATB and the external partner Alzchem Trostberg GmbH.

Your responsibilities

  • Participating the manure storage and anaerobic digestion experiments and the field trial including taking samples
  • Application of molecular biological methods for the detection of the microbial diversity (DNA/RNA extraction, high-throughput sequencing using the Oxford Nanopore Technology platform)
  • Bioinformatic evaluation of 16S rRNA gene amplicon datasets and construction of microbial networks to decipher the structure and potential function of microbial communities, to elucidate species interactions among each other and with their abiotic environment and to investigate the microbiome behaviour at the system-level
  • Presentation of project results at scientific conferences and stakeholder meetings, writing project reports and scientific publications

Your qualifications

  • Very good university degree in the field of microbial ecology in agricultural, environmental or technical systems (Diploma or Master of Science)
  • Knowledge and experience in microbiological analyses including extraction of nucleic acids, PCR techniques, modern sequencing technologies and well as bioinformatics and statistics
  • High interest in interdisciplinary cooperation at the interface of microbial ecology, bioengineering and agronomy
  • Very good written and spoken English and German skills
  • Ability to work in a team and willingness to cooperate, reliability, flexibility, personal commitment and ability to work independently
  • European Driving license class B

We offer

  • An attractive, interdisciplinary working environment in a team of experienced and young scientists and technicians
  • Excellent infrastructure for carrying out scientific work
  • Access to national and international networks for your scientific career
  • Family-friendly working conditions that promote the compatibility of work and family life
  • Company-owned electric bicycles for business trips
  • Participation on the VBB company ticket
  • Our institute is located on the edge of a picturesque park-like landscape and is easy to reach by public transport or by bike

The position is part-time (75%) and limited until 31.12.2024. The salary is based on your qualification and professional experience according to TV-L up to salary group 13.
