The WZB Berlin Social Science Center, research area International Politics and Law, research unit Global Governance (Director: Prof. Dr. Michael Zürn), seeks two

Student Assistants (f/m/d)

for the following positions:

1. Assistance for the unit’s director

to be employed for a period of 12 months, starting on 1st October 2020, with the possibility of extension and a weekly working load of 10 to 15 hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Supporting the director with tasks such as research and review of literature, data collection and preparation, editorial work on manuscripts

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s student in International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, or a related discipline
  • Very good course achievements
  • Very good command of written and spoken English and German languages
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Experience with and interest in methods of data collection, processing, and management (e.g., using Excel, STATA, R, or SPSS)

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge of theories and debates in International Relations and Comparative Political Science
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Experience with systematic text analysis
  • Experience with reference management programmes (e.g., Zotero, Citavi, EndNote)

2. Assistance for the unit’s researchers

to be employed for a period of 12 months, starting on 1st October 2020, with the possibility of extension and a weekly working load of 19 hours.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively supporting the researchers with their scientific work – especially in the areas of politicization, referendums, and issues of sovereignty – with tasks including research and review of literature; collection, processing, analysis, and visualization of data; editorial work on and discussion of scientific manuscripts, blog posts, and other publications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s student in International Relations, Political Science, Sociology, or a related discipline
  • Very good course achievements
  • Very good command of written and spoken English and German languages
  • Sound knowledge of MS Office applications
  • Experience with and interest in methods of data collection, processing, management, and visualisation (e.g., with Excel, STATA, R, or SPSS)
  • Experience with syntax-based data analysis and visualisation (e.g., R, STATA, or Python) and interest in computational social science approaches (e.g., web scraping, text analysis, network analysis)

Desired qualifications:

  • Knowledge of theories and debates in international relations and politics
  • Knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Experience with reference management software (e.g., Zotero, Citavi, EndNote)

Remuneration:

  • TV Stud III; currently €12.50 per hour
