The Department of Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation at the Leibniz-Institute for Baltic Sea Research Warnemünde (IOW) is offering the position of a full time (40 hrs/week)
Technical Employee (m/f/d)
in Informatics/Electrical Engineering
starting on 1.6.2021. Provided that the collective bargaining requirements are met, remuneration is paid in accordance with the TV-L salary scale up to EG 11. The employment will take the form of a two-year contract initially if admissible (according to § 14 (2) TzBfG). Part-time employment with at least 30 working hours per week is possible.
The IOW is an independent institute of the Leibniz Association, engaged in system analysis of coastal and marginal seas, with special focus on the Baltic Sea. The scientists of the four departments (Physical Oceanography and Instrumentation, Marine Chemistry, Biological Oceanography and Marine Geology) cooperate within the framework of a joint research program.
The position holder will be responsible for the processing and validation of acquired measurement data, as well as the transfer of data into oceanographic databases in close cooperation with the scientific working groups. This also includes the development of appropriate software tools. Another focus is on the technical and logistical preparation and implementation of field measurements during seagoing expeditions, and the deployment and maintenance of oceanographic instruments. The position holder is expected to support the scientific working groups in the preparation of project reports and publications.
Requirements are a Bachelor or Master degree in electrical engineering/electronics/computer science, measurement technology, marine technology, physics, physical oceanography or a related natural or geoscientific discipline with specialization in marine technology or computer science, good technical skills and experience in the IT field, as well as in the processing of data. Since parts of the activities are to be carried out on research vessels, the willingness and ability to work at sea for several weeks is mandatory. Sufficient knowledge of the English language and a class B driver's license are also required. Knowledge of databases/data management, programming skills in a relevant high-level language (e.g., C, C++, Python, Mat-lab), experience in working at sea, in scientific-technical reporting, and in the field of maritime measurement systems and sensor technology are desirable. The field of activity requires the willingness and ability to work in teams.
