Tenure-Track Researcher (100 %, f/m/d) in Finance
The main focus of your activities at ZEW will be to conduct scientific research in household finance, banking/financial intermediation, or expectation formation and work on demanding economic policy advising projects. A central activity of the research unit is the collection of the ZEW Financial Market Survey (FMT) data. Since 1991 financial market experts have been asked on a monthly basis about their expectations, e.g., regarding future trends in economic activity, inflation rates, and interest rates. The data are a unique basis for the empirical testing of financial market models and research on expectation formation on financial markets. The experts’ expectations are also the basis for the ZEW Indicator of Economic Sentiment – a leading indicator followed closely by the media and financial market practitioners, both in Germany and abroad.
Candidates should have a strong interest in quantitative and empirical finance research. A focus on expectation formation is not critical but the use of the FMT data, the design of new experiments, and survey questions is highly encouraged. The unit is looking for a researcher to support the regular collection and publication of the FMT data. The candidate will also contribute to the unit’s broader research fields of “household finance” and/or “banks and financial intermediation”.
Candidates should have completed, or be about to complete their PhD in economics or finance or a related field, preferably on a topic in the areas expectation formation, household finance, or banking/financial intermediation. Previous experience in data collection, documentation, and survey research will be helpful. Candidates should have a strong interest for empirical and experimental analyses, in-depth knowledge of econometrics, strong programming skills (e.g., stata, python or R), and an interest in survey and data management. Candidates should contribute to an excellent publication performance and, based on rigorous academic research, to advise national and European authorities. On top of this, candidates should have excellent writing skills and be willing to communicate research results to news outlets/media and the general public. Fluency in English is required; command of German is highly appreciated. Capacity for teamwork is essential.
