At the LIR, scientists from various disciplines - such as (molecular) biology, neuroscience, physics, medicine, and psychology - collaborate in an interdisciplinary manner. Research at the LIR is translation-oriented and is grouped into three research areas: molecular and cellular mechanisms of resilience, systemic mechanisms of resilience, and cognitive and behavioral mechanisms of resilience. Three platforms - for behavioral analysis in animals, for conducting intervention studies, and for knowledge transfer - support the research groups by providing appropriate methods and facilitating the further development of innovations. In keeping with the motto theoria cum praxi, the LIR makes its scientific findings and knowledge about resilience available to the public through press releases, lectures, workshops, training sessions, and consulting services.
The LIR cooperates closely with Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and its University Medical Center, including in two Leibniz ScienceCampi. The heads of the research groups are also professors at the university. LIR researchers are closely networked internationally with other institutions, with a focus on European research networks and collaborations with Japanese and U.S. universities. Within the Leibniz Association, there are collaborations with other Leibniz Institutes, including the Leibniz Health and Prevention initiative, the Leibniz Research Alliance “Aging and Resilience”, and the Leibniz Labs.
