Center for Behavioral Brain Sciences

Leibniz ScienceCampus Magdeburg

Human and animal behaviour is governed by complex processes in the brain. The Leibniz ScienceCampus “Centre for Behavioural Brain Sciences (CBBS)” studies the mechanisms of learning and memory processes at all levels of the brain – from molecular and cellular processes through to neural networks and the analysis of complex behavioural patterns in humans and animals.

This is a research area with great social significance, as it touches on fundamental issues of our biological and social existence. For instance, the neuroscientists at the CBBS examine which lifestyles help people to age healthily. They examine the prerequisites for successful lifelong learning and the role played by motivation in improving learning results. Why do older people find it more difficult to remember new things? What role does their own curiosity play here?

The scientists investigate which neurobiological processes decision-making is based on, whether human-machine interactions can be optimised using principles of brain functionality, and which treatment strategies for neuropsychiatric patients can be individualised. Another key topic focused on at the CBBS is the study of the processes of attention. Attention strongly influences what we perceive of our environment. Yet we still lack a sufficient understanding of the principles by which the human brain filters and selectively processes the many sensory impressions.
