How can the significance and the attainments of science be conveyed in a way that is comprehensible and inspirational? The work of the Kiel Science Outreach Campus (KiSOC) is dedicated to answering this question.

KiSOC seeks to close a gap in the existing research – namely the fact that although there are numerous activities and approaches within the domain of science communication, there has thus far been very little hard data on their effects and influencing factors. The research of the KiSOC therefore focuses on designing different outreach activities and measuring their effectiveness.

Selected communication approaches, such as academic exhibitions and learning laboratories, will be investigated, further developed and evaluated in individual projects. This will help identify critical influences on the effectiveness of these approaches. The work focuses on teaching academic content to different target groups, on the requirements and effects of different formats, and on the role played by those individuals involved in communicating.

Furthermore, the KiSOC will develop a joint framework model for science outreach work.
