For the DFG funded project “Urban Percolation” (UPon) in Research Department 2 Climate Resilience, PIK is offering a

Doctoral researcher position (m/f/d)

in the field of spatial data analysis (statistical physics, complex systems science), starting as soon as possible.

The position is funded for 3 years. Remuneration is in accordance with the German public tariff scheme (TV-L Brandenburg), salary group E 13. This is a part-time position with a weekly working time of 30 hours per week.

Key responsibilities:

  • Conduct your PhD on the percolation properties of cities and urban land-cover
  • This includes the analysis of spatial data by means of clustering, comparison of methods, and the development of new ones. Moreover, empirical findings should be described analytically where possible


  • You hold a Master degree in Physics, Math, Complex Systems Science, Computer Science, or related fields
  • You are strong in analytical thinking and have ease with quantitative work
  • You hold expertise in programming, experience with software development is valuable
  • Experience in geometry, network science, and handling geo-data is an asset but not required
  • Openness towards inter- and trans-disciplinary research approaches and teams
  • You have good communications skills and are fluent in oral and written English
