Junior Researcher (PhD student) in Economics of Migration (75% of FTE)

for a three (3) year, fixed term, renewable appointment in its research center “Poverty Reduction, Equity and Development” (PRED).

The successful candidate will join a team of researchers who work on international migration and global development challenges. As part of this team, you will work in close collaboration with economists at the Kiel Institute and members of an international, multidisciplinary research project that will conduct research on migration to Europe and predictions of migration flows. The purpose of the project is to improve management of inflows as well as integration of migrants who arrive in the European Union. The project is commissioned by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Framework Program and lasts 3 years.

The successful candidate is expected to pursue a PhD degree in the economics of migration, development economics or in a closely related field. Kiel University runs a well-established PhD program in “Quantitative Economics” (https://www.quantitative-economics.uni-kiel.de/en) that junior researchers at the IfW may join.

Candidates should hold (or be close to completing) a Master’s degree or equivalent in economics or in a closely related field (e.g. quantitative social sciences, econometrics). They should have very good knowledge of statistics, econometrics as well as relevant software (e.g., STATA and/or R) and be interested in applying these skills to study migration. Previous knowledge of migration research would be an advantage but is not required. We expect a willingness to pick up new quantitative methods and some programming skills. Previous knowledge in these areas will be an advantage. The working language of the project is English; excellent English skills are therefore required. Some knowledge of German would be useful, but is not essential.

The successful candidates will be part of a team with several PhD students and post-doctoral researchers. At the IfW, the candidate will join the well-established research center “Poverty Reduction, Equity and Development” with prominent research partners and a steady flow of high-quality publications. The position will be based in Kiel and is initially funded for three years at 75% of full-time equivalent. Ideally, the position will start on April 1 2020; we may negotiate a later start date. The contract is initially limited to 3 years according to the law on limited employment contracts in research (WissZeitVG). The salary is based on the German public sector pay scale (EG 13 TV-L) with 75% of a full-time position (currently 29,025 weekly working hours). The IfW usually offers - if necessary – contract extensions to finish dissertation within a maximum of four years.
