PhD-student (f/m/d)

DWI - Leibniz-Institut für Interaktive Materialien, Aachen

The IUF – Leibniz Research Institute for Environmental Medicine investigates the molecular mechanisms through which particles, radiation and environmental chemicals harm human health. The main working areas are environmentally induced aging of the pulmonary system and the skin as well as disturbances of the nervous and immune system. Through development of novel model systems, the IUF contributes to the improvement of risk assessment and the identification of novel strategies for the prevention / therapy of environmentally induced health damage.

The DWI – Leibniz-Institute for Interactive Materials is a federal and state funded research institute of the Leibniz Association based on the Melaten Campus of RWTH Aachen University. International young and experienced scientists from various disciplines develop interactive materials based on the principles of nature. It is a location at which people with different talents, experiences and skills work together, in order to learn from one another and generate new knowledge and new methods to create a better quality of life in our world.

The IUF and DWI are members of the Leibniz Research Alliance “Advanced Materials Safety” (https://leibniz-advanced-materials-safety.de/), which aims to advance the design and sustainable development of functional and safe materials. In the framework of this alliance  In the framework of this alliance the IUF working group “Particles, Inflammation and Genome Integrity” and the DWI are looking for a

for the research project “Polymer Fibre Tox”.

The project aims to investigate the potential adverse human health effects and mechanisms of toxicity of high performance (ultrafine) polymer fibres (HPFs) and their additives caused by their fragmentation and subsequent ingestion and inhalation. The research combines two complementary areas. The first deals with preparation, characterization and labelling of well-defined nano- and micro-fragments of HPFs. The second studies the phagocytosis and toxicity of fragments as a function of their shape, size and composition using 3D in vitro cell models of the human intestine and lung. The project will be implemented in an interdisciplinary setting involving research at the IUF (24 months) and research stays at the DWI in Aachen (12 months).

We are looking for an applicant with a high level of commitment, team spirit and organisational skills. The applicant should have a completed Master’s degree in life sciences, ideally in the fields of biotechnology and toxicology. Hands on experience with cell culture, molecular biological, biochemical and immunohistochemical methods as well as characterization of polymeric particles is a plus. A very good command of written and spoken English is a prerequisite.

The position is limited for the duration of 3 years. The employment relationship is governed by the provisions of the Collective Agreement for Employees of the Federal States (TV-L). The weekly working time is 25 hours and 54 minutes.

DWI supports the applicant to gain further qualifications. We offer our employees a broad spectrum of career opportunities in an attractive working professional environment (https://www.dwi.rwth-aachen.de/seite/institutskultur). DWI supports equal opportunities; an overview on the measures can be found here https://www.dwi.rwth-aachen.de/en/page/equal-opportunity-and-diversity.

We at the DWI - Leibniz Institute value diversity and therefore welcome all applications - regardless of gender, disability, nationality or ethnic and social background.

Please send your application (letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, references, proof of qualifications) preferably electronically to bewerbung(at)iuf-duesseldorf.de or click on Apply now.
