PhD student position (m/f/d)

Leibniz-Institut für Nutztierbiologie (FBN), Dummerstorf

The Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology (FBN) is a foundation under public law and member of the Leibniz Association. The Institute with about 300 employees is performing fundamental and applied research in the field of the biology of farm animals. The Institute provides an interdisciplinary research environment and excellent experimental and analytical facilities.

The research group “Epigenetics and Aging” at Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology invites applicants for a

PhD student position (m/f/d)

for 36 months starting as soon as possible.

Reference number: 2019-37

Task Description:

We are focused on understanding the molecular changes that occur during early aging that determine healthy lifespan. Our lab combines model organism work (mice and flies) with various techniques including mass spectrometry, molecular biochemistry, and behavioral testing.

We are currently exploring novel modeling methods of aging to discover innovative therapy avenues with the goal of preventing fitness decline and cognitive impairment. We welcome applications from excellent, highly-motivated candidates who enjoy collaborating with fellow scientists to advance our understanding of the molecular mechanisms of aging.

In particular, we seek a student to join an ongoing project characterizing altered metabolism - epigenetic connectivity in 2 giant mice strains. These mice were selected for 45 years based on their weight, and as such, they are unique and exist only at the FBN. Strikingly, these mice are 3 times the size of a normal mouse, making them the biggest mouse model in existence. Furthermore, they display a rapid aging process and various tissue failures.

We are looking for a candidate with master’s degree in biology, veterinary medicine, medicine or a relevant biological/biochemical discipline. The candidate should be able to work independently and have a strong scientific integrity. He or she should be motivated to study aging. We seek to employ individuals who are highly motivated team players and have a keen interest in science.

Desired assets

  • Previous experience in biochemistry (WB, IHC, RTPCT, CRISPR, Cas9/13, cell culture, ChIP), mass spectrometry or behavioral experimentation
  • Experience with scientific writing
  • Experience with basic computer programming
  • Experience with mice or drosophila work

We offer

  • Multifaceted and challenging research tasks in a performance‐oriented and family‐friendly environment
  • Modern equipment and integration in international and national research projects
  • Employment conditions according to the provisions of Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (TV-L), remuneration at the level of 65% of salary grade 13 TV-L
  • Participation in the company pension scheme (VBL)
  • Assistance with formal issues while settling into the new living environment

We are an internationally oriented research institute focusing on basic and applied research on the biology of domestic livestock. The Institute is committed to increase the proportion of women in areas where they are under-represented and suitably qualified women are encouraged to apply. Candidates with disabilities will be given preference in the case of equal qualifications and capacity to complete the project. We explicitly encourage applications from international candidates.

Application and travel expenses in the context of the application cannot be reimbursed.
