Through its research, ZMT contributes to developing science-based strategies for sustainable use of tropical coastal systems.

Postdoctoral Researcher in the scientific workgroup “Data Science and Prediction” (f/m/d)

The ZMT is establishing a new scientific workgroup “Data Science and Prediction” for the integration of heterogeneous, discontinuous, and big data, and a new science support group, starting on January 1st 2020.

Data science is an emerging field that is currently entering ecological and socioecological research to identify new and hidden relationships, correlations, patterns, and causal connections. ZMT aims at implementing the new methods and approaches to produce robust projections of trajectories for ecological and social change in complex tropical coastal socioecological systems. For this, heterogeneous, discontinuous, and big, quantitative and qualitative data will be integrated and comparatively analyzed by the new workgroup “Data Science and Prediction”. Collaboration with other Leibniz institutes and with the partners in the German Alliance for Marine Research (DAM) provide a lively research environment beyond the interdisciplinary research at ZMT.

Job tasks:

  • As postdoc in the new group, the candidate will support the workgroup leader
  • Research in the ZMT context


  • Doctoral degree in natural sciences or data sciences (field relevant for ZMT)
  • Adequate publication record

Additionally desirable:

  • Team spirit
  • Interdisciplinary experience
  • Interest in the tropics and collaboration with partners in the tropics
  • Willingness to undertake duty trips to tropical partner institutions

Details of the position:

The candidate will be on fulltime position and on a 36-month contract.

Salary will be paid according to the German TV-L EG 13.
