The main part of the research is carried out by guest scientists in weekly changing Workshops and by smaller research groups in the "Oberwolfach Research Fellows" program. The latter also includes the special postdoc program "Oberwolfach Leibniz Fellows". There are also training seminars for early career researchers. In addition, four weeks per year are reserved for three Mini-Workshops with around 15 participants, in order to have the opportunity to respond to current developments at short notice. Around 40 to 50 international experts, personally invited by the Director of the Institute, participate at the larger Workshops, including a considerable number of particularly qualified young talents.
A characteristic of all activities in Oberwolfach is the intensive research atmosphere, which is achieved through personal encounters and direct conversations in an environment free of any distractions with an excellent infrastructure. The MFO library is considered one of the best mathematical libraries in the world.
More than 2,500 guests visit the MFO every year, with around 75% coming from abroad. The entire spectrum of mathematics, including its applications in natural sciences and technology, is covered in the scientific programs of the MFO, thus taking into account the importance of modern mathematical methods for today's society. The MFO has been a member of the Leibniz Association since 2005.
