ERC Starting Grants sind akademische Meilensteine, die den weiteren Karriereverlauf maßgeblich beeinflussen. Sie werden an vielversprechende Nachwuchsforscherinnen und -forscher vergeben, deren Promotion zwei bis sieben Jahre zurückliegt. Bei den ERC Starting Grants können bis zu 1,5 Millionen Euro für bis zu fünf Jahre vergeben werden.

Bewerben können sich Forschende, die sich zeitlich sieben bis zwölf Jahre nach ihrer Promotion befinden. Dabei müssen die Antragsstellenden den bahnbrechenden Ansatz ihres Projekts sowie seine Machbarkeit nachweisen. Der ERC Consolidator Grant umfasst eine Förderung von zwei Millionen Euro über eine Laufzeit von fünf Jahren.
