Prof. Albert Sickmann

Vice President of the Leibniz Association

Albert Sickmann studied biochemistry in Bochum and completed his doctorate on the subject of "Proteome Analysis of Human Cerebrospinal Fluid". In 2002, he was appointed Junior Professor of Proteomics at Ruhr-Universität Bochum. He subsequently moved to the Rudolf Virchow Centre, DFG Research Centre for Experimental Biomedicine at the University of Würzburg, where he was appointed Professor of Protein Analytics in 2007.

In 2008, he joined the Institute for Analytical Sciences (ISAS) to strengthen the institute's newly established life sciences division. Today, he serves as Scientific Director for the Bioanalytics research area and as Chair of the Executive Board of ISAS. Since December 2025, Albert Sickmann has also been one of five Vice Presidents of the Leibniz Association. In this capacity, he is a member of the Board within the meaning of § 26 of the German Civil Code (BGB) and contributes to the strategic development of the Leibniz Association as well as to its legal representation.

His research is situated in the field of modern protein analytics, with a particular focus on the quantitative detection of post-translational modifications (including phosphorylations and degradations), the identification of protein mutations, and the analysis of complex protein networks. A central area of application of his work is the investigation of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, cardiac side effects in tumour therapy (cardio-oncology), and thrombosis. In addition, he continuously advances analytical methods in proteome research in order to expand their performance and applicability on an ongoing basis. A particular concern in this context is the translation of these analytical procedures into clinical research, with a view to making them available for diagnostic and therapeutic questions in precision medicine.

Alongside his responsibilities in research and teaching, Sickmann is also active as a member of the Executive Board of the Gesellschaft für Biochemie und Molekularbiologie (GBM), where he contributes his expertise to the strategic further development of the field.
